#davesdailychallenge (24): The Myth of Going Back. It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking at PTSD therapy for combat veterans, political posturing, or corporate culture…there is NO SUCH THING as going back. We are sold, or sell, the concept of “going back” all the time. How many dozens of political candidates talk about the golden age of yesteryear and how wonderful things used to be. When we obsess over the myth of the perfection of the past we miss the fact that we can’t not know what we currently know. We can’t unsee what we’ve seen. We can’t forget Fallujah. We can’t unexperience the recession. We can’t bring back our loved one. We must take who we are in the here and now as the base on which we can grow something extraordinary. Do not waste one second glamorizing what used to be. Learn from the joys and tragedies of your past certainly but focus on the present moment and how you’re going to create the best possible future with your actions today. There is no going back…and that’s a beautiful thing.
