#davesdailychallenge (106) The Power of the Status Quo. Like a mountain, the status quo in any organization or situation is often an imposing and insurmountable monolith. Since this is part of what I do for a living I see it all the time. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people all see the need for change so clearly yet the infamous, and ever powerful, status quo ensures that change falls flat. If you find yourself in a situation where you are trying to be a part of positive change, or a person in a position of influence and/or authority says that “change is coming”, understand that positive, long-lasting change is much harder than you think. It takes discipline, empathy, grit, open-mindedness, self-awareness, and charisma to make change stick. Just recall some of the biggest challenges in your personal and professional lives, or even some of the stories we hear every day. The examples are endless. The heart attack survivor that refuses to change their lifestyle. The members of a fraternity that refuse to realize the entire culture of student organizations is changing. The business group that has had outstanding success in legacy markets but refuses to see that future generations want a different product. I challenge you to realize the true difficulty of change on a meaningful scale. It is, however, possible and the good news is that, in the end, it is worth it. It is a true art form worth investing in. Respect the status quo…and then change it. Good luck my friends!
