The Rubber Band Trick

#davesdailychallenge (117): The Rubber Band Trick. Fair warning, some of you are going to read this and think I’m nuts. You might just be right but I promise you this works. One thing I see way too much of in this world is useless complaining. I draw a sharp contrast between this and constructive criticism of a given situation that has the overall intent to improve. Useless complaining is just for its own sake; plain old whining. We all do it from time to time but I learned of a trick from a friend of mine that can really help you to not only stop this destructive practice but help keep you mentally present and focused on improvement vs. complaining. Take a rubber band and put it around your wrist. Every time you hear yourself complaining, draw that sucker back and let it snap! If it hurts a little that’s the point. You need something to remind you what you’re doing because so often we whine without even really thinking about it. Keep doing it as long as it takes for your mind to consciously remind you to not whine. That little snap on your wrist becomes a physical trigger to remind you to stay constructive and positive vs. destructive and negative. Trust me…this really, really, really works. One last note…be prepared to talk about this because the first time you do it in public you will immediately be asked “what the hell was that?”. Enjoy!
