The Common Thread

#davesdailychallenge (125): The Common Thread. Without exception, whether or not they say it directly, all of my clients are seeking to establish or improve the sense of ownership that their people have in the overall goals of the organization. Many leaders sit in board rooms, meeting spaces, and coffee shops proselytizing this notion of ownership to their team members but make a critical mistake in follow-up. They don’t incentivize it. In order for someone to have true ownership over a goal it HAS to be THEIR goal. It can’t be another’s idea that is given to them followed up with a “get it done”-esque statement. Without their own ideas, beliefs, value structures, and personality infused into the overall goals of the team there will be little, if any, true ownership. If you want your peers, team members, and leadership to truly have a sense of belonging to the goal you can’t do it alone. I encourage you to celebrate those on your team that show ownership of the team’s goals and hold your junior leaders accountable to supporting their people. As a result of these efforts, leaders will be able to release the full power of what the team is capable of achieving and won’t have to micro manage high performers in order to ensure adoption. It’s better for everyone but it doesn’t come easy.
