Resistance is the Enemy

#davesdailychallenge (131): Resistance. Every one of us struggles with resistance. Resistance to change, to people, to discipline, to hard work, to advice we don’t want to hear (but secretly know is true). In one of my earliest challenges I wrote about the book The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. In this outstanding piece of work, he discusses the very human concept of resistance in depth but you can envision it as that little “force” in your heart and mind that leads to your procrastination, fear, mediocrity, and eventual inability to accomplish whatever it is you’re going after. Why haven’t you quit that job you hate? Resistance. Why haven’t you proposed to that person you know you love and cherish more than anything? Resistance. Why do you allow the vocal opinions of small-minded people to hold you back from what you know is right? Resistance. It can be much more granular too. I set my alarm nearly every morning for 4:30am. Yes, you read that correctly. If I don’t get out of bed prior to 5:00am it’s because of resistance. It’s because that voice in my head screams at me to hit the snooze button the second that alarm starts. Resistance overwhelms that part of my mind that knows there’s a reason why I set that alarm in the first place. Resistance is the enemy. It will do everything it can to keep you comfortable and complacent. Tell it to go to hell. Good luck.
