Superficiality is a Waste of our Time

#davesdailychallenge (159): Superficiality is a Waste of our Time. If I had to make a list of the top 5 things holding our society, businesses, families, and overall potential back it would be our collective obsession with the superficial. I’m not talking about clothing or physical appearances. I’m talking about allowing our collective discourse to stop at, and to be subsequently consumed by, the superficial layer of complexity. We don’t want to really talk about the causes of the “disease” we want to scream at each other over “symptoms”. Yes, these are metaphors but the take away is that every truly rewarding situation or relationship that I have in my life is largely defined by depth. Is it any wonder why nearly everyone says at one point in their life that they can count their true friends on one or two hands? Why is this? The reward of depth. Does it surprise us that one of the most universally accepted, and true, statements regarding personal development is that we are the summation of the people that we surround ourselves with? It certainly shouldn’t surprise you but why is this true? It is so because these people around us know us better than anyone and vice versa. Everything of value shuns superficiality and rewards depth. I challenge you to go all-in with just a few key elements in your life. Dive deep with your romantic relationships. Commit fully to your ideals. Invest everything in your professional pursuits and those close friends that will reward the mutual commitment. You’ll be happy you did.
