Not-So-Common Practice

#davesdailychallenge (153): Not-So-Common Practice. Have you ever heard something that seemed like such common sense it almost made you roll your eyes only to be followed with the thought “…but I’m not doing it.”? This happens all the time. Some of the most valuable pointers, tips, hacks, and strategies are all simple, common sense pathways designed to get the most bang for your buck. The problem arises when that little voice of resistance pops in to our heads telling us that because something is so common sense that it is inherently less valuable. The truth is that common sense does not always equal common practice. Smokers still smoke knowing it is killing them. Many of us still consume large amounts of unhealthy food with full awareness of the negative effects. Teams all around the world constantly have communication issues even though it is common sense to tell others what they need to know to be at their best. These types of situations where we don’t practice the common sense strategies that we know will help us happen all the time. That’s just human nature. Don’t be so quick to discount a common sense strategy. Too often we inherently assign more value to a strategy or piece of technology that is more complex or expensive. We inherently discount the legitimacy of straight forward, common sense approaches and much of the time our reasoning for this path is rooted in an unwillingness to accept the value, and even elegance, of the common sense mindset. The real value of this comes when we face any kind of hardship, as all teams do. When an undercurrent of simplicity runs through your organization, your team members will be better able to adapt and overcome all types of challenges when they can resort to what they inherently know.
